According to the latest global ranking of U.S. News & World Report, Eötvös Loránd University is Hungary's top higher education institution in seven academic fields and in overall results.
U.S. News & World Report published the results of its 2026/27 university global rankings on June 16, with the organization evaluating higher education institutions in 105 countries based on 13 indicators. The number of publications and conference appearances, global and regional research reputation, the proportion of international collaborations, as well as the number of publications within the top 10% and 1% by citations in each field determined the list. This year, the ranking includes the best 2,250 institutions. Details about the U.S. News & World Report ranking methodology can be found here in English.
Eight Hungarian universities made it onto the 2026/27 list; according to the evaluation, Eötvös Loránd University remains the country’s leading educational institution, while it ranked 507th globally this year.
Within Hungary, ELTE is followed in the ranking by Semmelweis University (546th), the University of Szeged (891st), and the University of Debrecen (904th). Óbuda University stands at 1001st, the University of Pécs at 1332nd, the Budapest University of Technology and Economics at 1547th, and the Szent István University at 1734th.
Academic Fields
Besides the overall ranking, U.S. News & World Report evaluated universities based on 51 narrower academic fields. Here, ELTE appears on the list of top institutions in 14 fields, as it did last year. Among these, in three fields (space science, physics, psychology) it is among the world's top 200, and in seven fields it leads the Hungarian institutions. Harvard retained its top position in the international elite this year; the second place goes to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Stanford takes third. Among the top ten, six are American, three are British and one is Chinese university.
